Chicago Ice Cream Shop Date on Film
March 12th, 2025
Margie’s Candies has been on my bucket list of places to shoot at for a few years and in my off season from weddings, I finally got the chance to head to Chicago and make that happen. If you’re not familiar, Margie’s is a cozy ice cream shop on the North Side of Chicago in Bucktown! It’s super recognizable with its huge yellow sign saying Margie’s Candies and its kitschy red + white awning; a dream location to shoot at for me since I have a huge soft spot for bold colors!
Being a film & digital hybrid photographer, I’m always learning something new in the film realm! I wanted to take this couples shoot as an opportunity to test some new gear and film techniques and boy, did it pay off.
One of the most coincidental things about this photo shoot is the one partner being photographed in our shoot is named Margie! Margie’s Candies! Hehe! We definitely took the opportunity to be a little silly with some photos like posing Margie next to the sign that says Margie, but overall we had such a sweet time eating ice cream at 10am on a Wednesday.
We started off our shoot inside Margie’s so we could be the only ones in there! Who goes to an ice cream shop at 10am? You’d be surprised; more people than you think. We just about had the entire shop to ourselves, hanging out in one of the booths with an oldies radio, yappin about music, and eating a raspberry sundae!
The weather just so happened to be perfect to go outside the shop for a few photos too! We really couldn’t have gotten luckier with a 55 degree partly cloudy day in March in Chicago. Like I mentioned earlier, Margie’s has been a dream spot for me to shoot at specifically for their eye-catching store front with the bold yellow and red colors, and it photographed even better than I imagined (definitely helped having the sweetest couple as my subjects!).
If you’re a sucker for an entire love story, here is Margie + Kyle’s gallery in full; Lots of laughs, ice cream, and gentle love.
